The Brackley-based outfit went into the weekend needing to out-score Ferrari by just three points in Sochi.

However, Mercedes failed to do so in the provisional result, with Lewis Hamilton taking a commanding victory and Nico Rosberg registering a retirement after a throttle issue.

Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas collided on the final lap of the race while battling for third place. Following an investigation, the stewards decided that Raikkonen was at fault.

He was given a 30-second time penalty, which dropped him from fifth to eighth place in the final classifications.

The change in the result handed Mercedes the teams' championship, leaving Russia with an unbeatable 172-point lead over its nearest rival.

It was the second consecutive season that Mercedes clinched the title at Sochi. After its 2014 success, the team has continued to dominate Formula 1, scoring 11 victories so far.

However, this season Ferrari has proved to be more of a threat, with Vettel claiming three wins for the Italian outfit. The German is now ahead of Rosberg in the drivers' championship.
