The report will be published on Sunday 26 April and reveals that the reigning world champion’s wealth has increased by £20 million over the last year, to £88 million.

The Mercedes driver currently leads the 2015 championship after winning three of the first four races of the season. He is well clear at the top of the richest sportsmen table and claimed the same position in 2014.

McLaren’s Jenson Button has slipped from second place last year to third in 2015. The 2009 world champion’s future in the sport looked uncertain at the end of last season, but it was announced in December that he would partner Fernando Alonso at McLaren Honda.

Despite a tough start to the season on track, Button’s wealth has increased by £8 million to £71 million. He is third, just behind Manchester United football player Wayne Rooney, who is the wealthiest footballer currently playing in the Premier League.

Tennis star Andy Murray is in fourth with a wealth of £48 million, ahead of footballers Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard.

The list is based on identifiable wealth – including land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies.

The 1,000 richest people in Britain and the 250 wealthiest people in Ireland will be revealed in Sunday’s The 2015 Sunday Times Rich List
