Following final FIA assessments, Alonso and Bottas were cleared to return to the race track at the Sepang International Circuit.

Alonso suffered a concussion in a testing crash at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last month. He was forced to miss the final four-day event and the 2015 season opener in Australia.

In the run up to the Malaysian Grand Prix, the Spaniard has been training hard and working in the McLaren simulator.

A statement released by the FIA said: "In accordance with normal procedures, McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso was this morning examined by the FIA Medical Delegate and Chief Medical Officer at the Sepang Circuit Medical.

"During the examination the driver passed all mandatory fitness tests and has thus been declared fit to race in this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix."

Bottas has also been given the all clear to compete this weekend. The Williams driver suffered a back injury during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

After being checked over in the Albert Park Circuit Medical Centre, he was transferred to hospital for precautionary scans. The FIA deemed him unfit to race on Sunday morning.

However, the Finn passed his final assessments and will race at the wheel of the Williams FW37 for the first time this season.

"Following the injury that Valtteri sustained to his lower back during qualifying for the Australian GP, he has been with a leading physiotherapist who has been working with Valtteri and his trainer to make sure he received the best treatment possible ahead of this weekend’s race," a statement from Williams said.

"The team has always been fully supportive of Valtteri and his determination to return to the cockpit and following final approval by the FIA medical team in Malaysia today, we are pleased to confirm that Valtteri will be back in the FW37 this weekend for the Malaysian Grand Prix."
